have a 88 justy 5-spd, driving the other day and it shut off. had towed home then tried to restart, it fired up ran for about 20 seconds shut off. replaced dist and coil, stil have the same problem. have fuel at carb. any suggestions ?

Does it cut out only when the car is idling or does it do it anytime?

its probably a vacuum thats disconected or broken....
i dont have the carb version...but i ad the same problem...and a otter guy on a otter forum ad exacly the same....
a Vacuum hose got disconected and it did the exact same thing...stard good and cut after 20 sec....
the vacuum that gave me that problem was a litle ruber tube starting on the uper left side of the intake and going to a sensor bolted on the uper left side of the firewall...
Look for unpluged or disconected tubes...
once i deconected the electrical on the sensor the car started and keep running no problem... my problem was that the fitting for the tube was broken on the sensor...so i needed a new sensor...whit that sensor disconected i was able to drove the the scrap yard and it was fixed... the car was not running 100% moire like 95% but it was drivable no body but me was able to see the diference...
Hopefully its only that....

Hi, Depending on your model, there are a couple of other stuff that causes grief as well. The distributor insulator may be broken. If you have points and condensor the points or condesnsor may be at fault. The carbs come with a "wonderful" feature called an accelerater pump and solenoid. It's near the top of the carb and has a single lead wire connected to it. when it gets dirty or stops working it behaves like what you described. Hope you sort it out soon.

the other day i took my car to a mechanic and he told me i wanted points and condensor for my ride, i forced and got the money went down john crrok and bought the things....i didn't go back to that mechanic cause my mechanic was back only to find out that my car doesn't use points nor condensor it uses some sort of electrical thingy.
the point i'm bringing across is that some mechanic nuh know jack whe dem doing..
does the 88 justy uses points nor condensor cause i still have them at my house brand new same way.

Unfortunately it's difficult to say outright what it does or doesn't use. The Justy's right through up to '95 (when we last got them in JA) are configured for several markets so it depends on several things. Some were Fuel injected others were carbed. Some use points and condensors while others use electronic ignition modules in the distributor. some were 1200 while others were 1000 and some of the 89-95 are manual and others are ECVT. And there are several cmbinations in the middle from all of what I mentioned before. Most mechanics I know pull and then tell you what to buy. Even the brakes are varying because the ones that came with 13" wheels carry a different caliper and pad from those with 12" wheels. When you go to John Crook and look in the parts book you are overwhelmed. Most of ours in Ja came from the European market but there are a few that were made for other places as well. When I bought wheel cylinder washers the first time the sizes just didn't match. I found out the market plays a lot in the parts you need becuase the parts I got first were for the US market. TEXT

A nice rule is pull and buy but don't damage or destroy the old ones until the new part fit and works.

It's the Justy equivalent of an automatic tranny. It stands for electronic continuously variable transmission. There is no shifting of gears. a steel belt moves between two pulleys that spread and close as speed changes giving an infinite amount of gear ratios. In some owners minds it stands for hell. They used to give out often without warning and in JA the cost of replacing the powder clutch (the common culprit) was about J$60,000.00. I think the ECVT or some variation is still used in some Saturn cars. Many JA owners converted their ECVT's to manual transmissions. I can't say what happens on the US and Canadian front.
