Hi, I'm worried about my consumtion and cold starting. My subaru is spending too much gas! It's a 1991 Justy 1.2 GL with a auto-choke and a 98.000km on the clock. When driving economicly the car spends 10 L per 100 km! When I'm driving with the pedal to the matal, the consumtion is around 11-12/100km! I'm not driving in 4x4, but it is winter up here and the tempeture is around -5°c to +5°c. I have also tried all kinds of petrol additives. I've recently replaced the following: Distributor Cap, distributor rotor, sparkplugs, air filter, oil change, I had the auto-choke adjusted by a professional. The ignition wire was changed 40.000 km ago. But on cold mornings, she still dies right after starting. And yes, I fully depress the accalerator once, then I start it. Is there any cold-start or air valve that I should check on? Are there any parts I'm totally forgetting to replace? Thanks in advance! J. Fridriksson from Iceland

Is it really bad when you first start? or does it just die after the initial start? Mine will not idle in those temps until I get it warmed up. I know that I have choke problems, it sounds to me like you may be in the same boat. I know you said a professional checked it out, i personally have not met a mechanic that I trust yet. Your fuel consumtion does not seem that out of wack to me, can you convert it to miles per gallon for me though, I did a conversion and it looks to me like it would be pretty high. Also remember your dragging around the 4wd tranny and rear end so she will use a lil more then the fwd ones.

MPG / 19.5 US MPG When starting from cold, the car starts really easily but isn't able to rev, then I just let it die, to let the fuel evaporate. Then I depress the accelerator again, start it, again it justs fires up right away, but then sometimes I can keep it alive by reving a bit. I have to keep the revs while idleing for the next few minutes. I don't think the problem lies in the ignition system. There must be a valve or similar which isn't working right. About the 4x4 transmission, There is a failiure in the driveline, it does whine very loud while driving around 40 mp/h to 53 mp/h there could be a little bit resistance there? You can't have a conversation to the passangers between those speeds!

Sounds like an internal problem with the motor to me. Something in there is not moving like it is supposed to be moving. Have a subaru mechanic open up the motor and take a look. But before you do that, have them check the entire exhaust system for some kind of clogging. Check the catalyic converter, it might be the culprit. My 2003 mustang cobra had some minor stalling problems untill the ford technicians found out that the catalytic converters were clogged.

My Justy is going to a autorised Subaru shop after two weeks. They are going to adjust the auto-choke and carb.. Hopefully that is going to take care of the cold-starts, consumtion and the backfire that I here once in a while I'll keep you posted. But mean while, can you share the fuel consumtion of your Justy with us?

The Hitachi carb on these cars is super fincky, especially in cold weather. I have been tooling with converting it to a manual choke.
More than likely your car has a choke that is sticking and making it run rich which would explain your poor gas mileage. Be careful as it may be letting fuel get in with your engine's oil and thinning it. Check your oil... If it smells like gasoline or looks overfull you should change it ASAP and change it very often until you get that fixed.
