Here is some good advice.
Get the same model/type alternator from a salvage yard.
Trial-fit it, and if it fits up, hooks up, and works, buy the $$$ one.

Gen 2 is a 55 amp, Gen 1 is a 45. Don't quote me on the gen 1 making an educated geuss.

i am looking to do the same thing as plugitin is doing, i had my system in and alt blew, so i got a refurb alt form autozone, disconnected system, and battery still kept dying. had them test it, instant fail?!!? had a company rebuild it, autozone put brushes in backwards. so currently the alt has new parts, battery died again, got brand new battery. still keeps dieing while driving down the road, replaced battery ground wire and still dies... help please!!!

Lots of really bad rebuilds out there sadly.
My 1989 FSM says it is a 55 amp alt.

Justy electrical systems are not very condusive to high amp aftermarket accessories. you may have burnt the round two wire connector coming from the engine harness to firewall cluster. pull it apart and check the female side for burn marks. usually quite obvious... If it is burnt it might be very hard to separate. this is usually accompanied by a brake light on. good luck...
