Just weld on some sheet metal! Oh I have been, trust me. Pretty soon the car will be completely constructed of small patch panels!

This is an absolutely epic thread. It gives me hope....I'm wondering how you made out with the C.O.P> set up you were tossing around..? I have some coils and wiring pigtails kicking around off of a GM LS engine'd pickup if you are intersted....

I have some coils and wiring pigtails kicking around off of a GM LS engine'd pickup if you are intersted.... I am just running the one coil still. Electrically, I have all that I need for COP, but there is no convenient location to mount three coils close to the spark plugs where they wouldn't be exposed to alot of heat. I could mount them further away, but either way I would still need long sparkplug wires, so the distributor is still the simplest. Also, the Justy engine wouldn't benefit much from individual coils as it doesn't rev all that high, and has no problems with spark blowing out under boost.

Is this still active? What happened with your setup?

Is this still active? What happened with your setup? Terry Yes, this is still active. It passed aircare quite easily on Christmas Eve. I have a boost spike issue right now, that causes the car to occasionally hit the safety boost limit. It is probably a loose vacuum line, but I haven't bothered to look into it any further yet. I don't daily drive it at the moment as I am driving my summer car, but it still works very well. The only problem I've had with this project has nothing to do with the turbo at all. I had a water pump seal failure, and worn suspension bushings replaced. Also, I have had to weld up various rust holes in the frame to keep the passenger floor from flooding. Otherwise, everything has been fine. I even took it to Prince George at Christmas time. I had it at full boost going uphill for as long as 5 minutes at a time! If that didn't break it, then I am satisfied that I have it tuned well. The altitude compensation worked well enough as well to keep me satisfied. Other than that, I didn't drive it much this winter as Vancouver didn't have any ice/snow at any time that I was home from work. I started this project in 2008, and it has been running well for me. In fact I've had the turbo on for so long, that all the paint on the pipes and VHT paint on the manifold has peeled off, and these parts have started to get some surface rust. They could use some reconditioning. Next time I'll have to use more stainless steel. I have been spending more of my time with this project: (If this link violates the rules then I'll remove it) www.k20a.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78816I have been too busy with other things, and my progress has slowed in the last few months, but I have alot of new ideas and parts waiting to go into that car as well. Hehe. Indeed if it didn't pop going up to Prince George, it is probably okay. My last motor blew going to Whitespot :\
The work is really impressive and I'm dumbfounded how you slapped an EFI head on a used carb motor, stuck a turbo on it and haven't had oil pressure issues.
That CRX is sweet, screw the forum rules, it's relevant. I will be in contact about your MS setup as I am building one for my car. I have an IHI RHB5 to go on, but I would rather get it running NA first and see how it all plays out. Also my car is kind of rotting away and I'm balancing it's future a little. Great thread here by the way, I learned a lot just from your short comings. ;D

Due to some water pump issues, I have changed the front cover on the engine. Technically I'm on a different oil pump now as well. The old front cover had so much scarring on the housing from the water pump impeller that I had to replace it too once I found it. I thought the bearings would have spun on this engine by now for sure too! I have lots of oil pressure gauges in the shop that could easily be installed, but I have decided that ignorance is bliss. If the engine were to blow, I probably wouldn't rebuild it. I would part out the good parts to the community here and move on most likely.

The fitting in the block is BPT. Just remember, any Justy parts you no longer require have a home just a boat ride away. Terry

The fitting in the block is BPT. Just remember, any Justy parts you no longer require have a home just a boat ride away. Terry How much space do you have at home for Justy parts? I have a crate build out of a pallet that is full to the top with Justy parts. I also have an entire fuel injected engine & transmission sitting outside as well. It was given to me for free, and I was told that it probably has spun bearings, but I have never looked any further. I might also have another spare block lying around as well. These cars tend to turn people into hoarders due to the lack of available parts. I would see parts available when I was on the road and keep bringing them home with me. I remember at one time I met another forum member in Kelowna and picked up another just-in-case engine from him as well. I parted that one out with a friend, and shipped the cylinder head to England for another forum member to help him out with his buggy project. He paid almost $300 CDN to have it shipped to him. I didn't even charge him for the cylinder head. These parts are definatly getting rare as the years pass.

Something left of this project? Parts? MS? Sorry, I haven't been getting emails from this board. The car is still fully assembled and working. It just needs a battery as I haven't been driving it as of late.

If you're getting bored, would you consider selling it? Baha! I live in Alberta so it wouldn't be far. ;p
I'm quite jealous of your fabrication and automotive abilities, I like to think I'm fairly knowledgable but you're one of those people that make me wanna learn more!

So a question to the OP. Would there be any hope of changing your Turbo Justy's gearbox to make better use of all that turbo power? I'm new to automotive hobby work but have not seen this topic discussed so far in this thread. Thanks!

This thread is amazing, beautiful work. Still active? I am an electrical engineer/embedded systems engineer and welder and looking at turboing the Justy I just got... very, very impressed with your work, and will probably use it as guidance (AKA copy everything you did.) I think the only thing I would do differently is the piping to the throttle body, but I can't think of how I'd do it better, so take that as you will. BTW - if you need a cheap source for an EGT gauge, 1993 Mitsubishi Galantes (w/ the 2.0L I4) have one. It's available for $34 brand new from rockauto among other sellers. They use it as an EGR temp sensor, but it should do excellently as an EGT gauge as well, it's just a thermocouple. If you are junkyard scrounging, a more common vehicle with an EGR temp probe is a 00-03 Maxima. Any chance your spare parts motor has an EFI harmonic balancer on it? Mine appears to be wobbling. I will trade parts I've started hoarding already for it, or gladly pay whatever you want

I spent approximately 6 months on this build as the project evolved / parts arrived. I must have spent just over $1,000 overall on the build if I had to take a guess. The most expensive components were the Megasquirt and the clutch. Everything else was from the autowrecker basically. The steel pipe was only $60 or so I think. The blow-off valve was free... All in all this conversion was quite cheap as far as turbo projects go. So a question to the OP. Would there be any hope of changing your Turbo Justy's gearbox to make better use of all that turbo power? I'm new to automotive hobby work but have not seen this topic discussed so far in this thread. Thanks! This car could definitely make use of a taller gearbox, though I'm not aware of any that are available. This thread is amazing, beautiful work. Still active? Unfortunately I don't have an extra harmonic balancer.

So, long time no respond huh... Sadly due to the lack of winter here in Vancouver, I haven't needed to use my Justy for years! We haven't had any snow, or ice for that matter that lasted any longer than a few hours. Gearheadeh your friendly local moderator paid me a visit this past July to have a look at what has become of my Justy. It has been sitting in a field behind my workshop for almost 3 years. The grass and blackberry vines had completely enveloped the car it had been sitting for so long. Gearheadeh took some updated pictures. I'm sure he'll post them up eventually. Needless to say, the car needs some clean-up and refinishing for sure. He asked me to come back to my thread and post my Megasquirt maps for the community, so I've attached all the latest variations with this post. Oh, and wouldn't you know it... I put a fresh battery in the car, and added fuel. The car started up first crank and drove itself out of that field. The parking brake cables were stuck a bit, but they soon loosened up after I worked them back and forth for a bit. A quick pressure wash, and back to streets! It drove just the same as it always has. Same rattles from sloppy engine mounts and all. I drove it for an hour boosting around with that noisy blow-off valve confusing people on the street. This car just won't quit! (Though I suspect rust will win this one eventually). Jeremy Attachments:Justy Maps.zip (62.85 KB)
