I have wanted a Justy since 1988 when my dad's friend bought one. Well, late last month I picked up a '91 4x4 5spd GL 4dr with 50k original miles. I had to replace the thermostat and it needs a few more things, but wow - what a car! Such a blast to drive. It has a few oil leaks and prolly needs a timing belt soon. Also needs struts (all feel OK except the right rear, but since the car is pretty old I will get new ones).
Anyway, pretty excited - want to see what kind of mpg we can get out of it. It will primarily be my fiancee's commuter as I have an '01 Impreza coupe that I cannot part with, but really happy anyway.
Cheers!

I like the plate frames. That is where I bought my Justy. I worked there from 00-05. Check Jersey Justy pics.

Very nice! What a clean car. I like the rear stereo speakers-- Are they custom?

Very nice! What a clean car. I like the rear stereo speakers-- Are they custom? Thanks! I was just checking this car out today, my friend stopped by and I had 2 Justys in the yard. The rear speakers are Infinity 6.5" 3-ways that I installed. I dynamatted the inside of the hatch as much as possible, and ran the speaker wires up inside the right side and into the body through a stock rubber tube (what a pain, but makes it all invisible). The panel is 1/4" MDF board with an aluminum frame bonded to the rear for stiffness, and it's also dynamatted. It all added so much weight that it showed me that the hatch struts were not up to the task, so those were replaced. It sounds GREAT combined with the 4x6 plates in the dash. My favorite part of it is that it does not interfere with the car's storage. Oh - I also needed to rubber-mount the license plate. We are adding an 8" powered subwoofer next weekend (or soon) and will be making it a "quick disconnect" so it can be easily removed for luggage capacity.

Okay, it's official now, fully transferred and insured back in my name. It's been in the shop for a long while again, BUT it's nice and tight with every single piece of rubber in the front suspension replaced with my bushing collection, there is now no more clicking in the LF axle area, water pump is rebuilt, brake system has been gone through and it passed smog. The brakes are not perfect - I swear this car is haunted. I am suspecting the proportioning valve but basically the brake pressure is very low in the rear. Some day I will be able to lock up the front wheels and at that moment I will pass out with joy. I don't really like the exhaust, so I am going to see if the shop can re-do it or who knows what. It wouldn't pass smog because it was running too clean (derrr huh?) when the cat would heat up, and not clean enough when cold. So, they stuck another small cat on where the old little rear one was, but in the process it looks as though a blind man welded up the exhaust while the car was on a rally stage. So now that it's sorted, essentially, I am going to see if the shop wouldn't mind fixing it, and re-piping the whole car while they are at it. The shop where I go likes to do fun stuff, so I am going to see if their welder guy would be interested in making a 'cat adaptor' sort of like what Armageddous made so that I can have them put one normal cat in the stock location, or just run a downpipe down to a normal cat where it makes sense. As long as he does a nice job with the manifold cat and the heat shield, smog should not be a problem since no one has ever seen a Justy. It just has to pass. Anyway, I am really excited and it's been so fun driving the car again. I took off the roof racks and put the hub caps on so it looks like my old Justy in drag but is smoother on the motorway and for some reason has no problem hitting redline in 5th gear quite easily. I do not remember that before.. Shifts are nice and tight, and yes, this is still a '91 4X4 5spd. It's all in the bushings!! This is coming from someone who paid for a transmission rebuild at 52k miles... Oh yeah, turned over 82k miles last week. Bought it in '06 w/ 49k from the grand-daughter of the original owner. Oh, I also had the driver's seat rebuilt (foam), the back seats fixed and a few other interior bits corrected. The back seats were coming apart on top since the cardboard edging had long gone. Hmmm what else... Well, I am on my 2nd set of ignition wires/cap/rotor and my 3rd fuel filter. Woot! What's next... Well, I want to put in an oil pressure and water temperature gauge, and correct the aforementioned exhaust issues. I'll probably put the racks back on as well. Part of why this has taken so long is that my work has been nuts, and my daughter is now 18 months old. I just got done building our office in Denver, and then New York, and now off to the UK. I saw a Justy in Denver!! Also, my WRX is finally running and just recently dyno tuned, put down 272whp/255tq with the "safe" tune. Going to put 5k more miles on it, swap out a couple items, and shoot for 320whp. youtu.be/Qq3-oaUF9Z0I am going to drive the Justy tomorrow, and I am pretty excited about that. I am going to swing by a Subaru dealer and see if I can get some Subaru key blanks cut, and maybe replace the gas door lock since it doesn't work anymore. I'll have to get some pics, but sadly it looks a bit run down these days. I am also going to try to find a LF fender at a yard as mine was dented, insurance "fixed" it and now it looks terrible. I mean the second I see the Justy I see the fender and the terribly mis-matched paint. I would much rather have the dent. Love this car. It really makes me happy. It's a joy to drive it.

Oh yeah, couple people have asked me what I spent on this car. It would be pretty sad to find out the actual numbers, but quick estimates put the total between $8k and $10k, including the car. I paid $2500 for it, spent $3k at Subaru having the trans rebuilt, 60k service including the timing belt, and a couple other things. The last bill was around $2200, and over the years I have bought SOOO many parts and items and done a lot of the work myself. It's astounding to think of the work I have personally done on this car, combined with the work that other mechanics have done. It's like it's a Fiat in a Subaru suit, but ahh - I love it.
This weekend, I am heading to one of my favorite things of all time, the Japanese Classic Car Show. Last time I was there, there was a Subaru 360. That was pretty sweet. As crazy as it sounds, I want my little Justy to sit there some day. I know it's not a 1st gen which would be the real classic Justy, but at the same time most people who find out that I drive this car have never heard of or seen one. So I think it could happen.
