this is a great post.I was waiting to find a FWD tranny to dissect and check out if a swap could be done. Why can't the FWD internals be put into a AWD tranny to yield that much faster final drive?

Interesting idea, shim up the springs or replace them with stonger springs to help that blocker ring do it's job.About double clutching, for those that are not sure what this is and would like to hear a master driver doing this.Rent the old movie BULLET with Steve McQueen. One of the greatest chase scenes ever filmed between a mustang and a dodge charger. Listen as well as watch Steve Mcqueen drive while double clutching all his shifts!!.

Well done Stacks!! I have been away from the forum for awhile...this is a great thread. Haven't really had the time to peruse and digest all that is covered here, but is nice to get an in-depth discussion of the insides of our trannies, with nice pics as well. Thankfully, I have never had any issues with my manual gearbox after nearly 155,000 miles, but never hurts to be informed for future reference. These kinds of posts are why I like this forum ...keep them coming!!

**stacks** I will give those bolts a look this weekend and let you know. Quick update: I gave some force to the shifter holding it in 1st and found that it slipped a bit further into 1st when I eased off the clutch. Perhaps I am just not getting all the way into gear. Still does not explain why it is a pain to hit 1st versus the all the other gears (that upshift and downshift normally). Neigh I have heard rumor that a fool could put added washers up to the rubber on the shift links ends to compress them thus removing the slop. Then again I could remanufacture the shift links with nylon to remove the slop as well. hmm..

**stacks** Yep it has balls! ;D They looked round and shiny. --sorry I can't keep a straight face typing this--
moving on..
I found that the trans mount is really soft, not broken, just contaminated and soft. Much different than the engine mount (which is firm rubber). Current theory: the trans is moving enough to pull to shifter out of gear.

Hi fellas. I'm new to this, but I have a different question in which I hope I can get an answer?? I'm making an off road justy and I'm trying to figure out on how to lower the first gear ratio (A granny gear). This information posted is awesome and I cann't believe how many people are on this site. I look forward to learning more from the knowledge shared here.
