I have replaced a thermostat on a carb model, pretty straightforward. So is the car not heating up? Even if the thermostat is bad, it should still warm up, just not as fast. Unless the temperature is -30 like it is here now......

It doesnt produce any heat even with what I thought was a stuck thermostat. I did replace the thermostat today ten bucks and to find a heater core is virtually impossible. I will look online later on. The dealership wants 230 bucks and I was thinking of flushing the system out with a hose. To get that would be a 1 to two week wait. It doesnt look like a picnic to get at it though through under the dash and remove those clips. Its about degrees here and gets down to 15 at night with six inches supposed to fall over tonight. I was thinking of a 12v plug in heater but that would probably just blow the fuse I wonder if a bigger alternator can be purchased? bobby

It may be easier to pull the dash out, I have done that a few times and probably takes me about 45 minutes to pull it out. If you choose to go that route, let me know, I have good notes on it.
Where are you at? I have a couple of spare heater cores I could probably spare (good used). Did it used to blow heat and then stop? Have you checked the valve that shuts off flow to the heater core? Or the linkage from the heater control slider to the valve? Also check that all the ductwork is in place under the dash. I have had the main duct from the blower come off, and this results in the blower not blowing through the heater core.

I live in upstate washington state. I will probably go through the dash. It used to blow heat and stopped. A friend had the same problem and said the same thing. His fix was a few hundred at a shop. I was looking in kent,wa at used heater cores online for a few bucks but trying to find without the net would be hard. Last time I ordered a part online it was the wrong one and got into a big mess. I found out this same guy sold people motors in other states and they never got to the destination yet where even sent. I wish i had a shop with all this some day. Just sucks when you go to work with no heater. I cant complain though I can actually get up my driveway with the little car. I will give you something for the heater core if you want to sell it. Thanks for all the help. bobby

You might use a heater from a different vehicle if you can mount it somewhere. You could just set it on a box on the floor for awhile and fix it nice later. I once put a very nice HOT heater out of a 72 Datsun wagon into my 67 GMC van. It worked very nicely for many years. Maybe you just clamp on some more hose to your existing hoses so you can do it ? Just an idea to get you thru to springtime!
