Alright, I am looking for a tachometer to put in my justy dl so i can save some gas.. i just would rather have one than not.. i found a 4wd cluster at the local scrap yard that has a tach in it that i could grab, only thing is I'm not sure how hard it'll be to hook up to my wire harness.. or are all justy wire harness's the same? if i already have the plug in on my wire harness behind my cluster that would make it easy, other wise i was looking at this one i found on the internet... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009SS6GSonly thing is, it says it has a switch on the back to select 4, 6, or 8 cylinder.. i take it this won't work in a justy because it is a 3 cylinder? Is the best bet to just grab the 4wd cluster and make it work even if i have to cut wires to hook it into the wire harness?

thanks alot stacks, you are always quick and helpful man, i appreciate it! well, does anyone know of any good 3 cylinder tachs? i guess the sunpro cp2012 works for 3 cylinders, but apparently they dont make it anymore.. then i found somewhere that the iequus 8068 is the only other one.. anyone else know of any others? or could anyone steer me towards the best one you know of? thanks.

also, i heard that if you get a tach that has 4, 6, and 8 cylinder settings, that it will read correct for a 3 cylinder on the 6 cylinder setting, anyone know if this is true or false?

Volkswagen has a 3-cylinder diesel, 2 actually. Non-USA of course. (so your rpm's will be metric - j/k)
VW Polo and VW 3L. Polo comes with a 3 or 4 banger. 3L comes with 2 different 3-bangers. 3L used to be called Lupo but was just a re-badged Seat (that's the make). Plus the Seat Arosato uses one of these 3-bangers too. BUT I don't know if any of these cars actually have a tach!

I am one of the unfortunate DL owners without a rev counter...always wondered how high the little engine turned at highway speeds, sure sounds like it's winding out pretty high. I wish I could find a chart somewhere in the literature showing rpms vs. road speed through each of the gears. Would be nice to know, esp. with the oil pressure gauge installed.

With my GenII 4WD, I only ever took it up to ~80mph a few times, and that would be around 4k rpm. Trying to keep up with Bay Area traffic (average speed on local motorways are 75-95mph) is a little intense at times, but usually you would find me putting along in the slow lane at around 75mph/3500rpm. Justy seems happy there, though I always wished for a taller 5th since the car seemed to be stable and fine even around 80mph. I thought the perfect setup for a 4WD Justy would have been a fairly close ratio 4spd with a "freeway gear" whereas in my Justy hitting 5th didn't really drop the revs much. It seems like, for example, the spread between 3rd and 4th was far greater than the spread between 4th and 5th. Also, it seems like, on both of the GenII EFI Justys I have owned, "something" happens around 4krpm where the engine makes noticably more power. Both cars do this. Anyway, I really really really want to get a tach in my GenII FWD DL and I am willing to try a few things out if anyone has any ideas. I am currently "between jorbs" at the moment so I have some time, plus I have a less-than-perfect Justy I am willing to try a few things out on. I would like to see where I am at RPM-wise as this car feels a little more confident with it's taller final. If anyone has a GL cluster and could get me started on some wiring diagrams, I would try that route otherwise I can see if I can find a low-dollar 6cyl tack that I can make work on the Justy.

Alright well I searched a bit and found a Sunpro CP-2012 on eBay. The seller has 5 left if anyone wants one... This is the discontinued tach that works with engines of 2-10 cylinders. So I will do a detailed writeup of installing this tach in my DL, and go from there. Still willing to try other options, but I am hoping this one will work for me. It's slightly silly looking - I like the one that Drew posted better, but it looks like it should work. 10k rpm yes, but I can have the "shift light" come on at 6k. Here's the auction: cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200364566312&viewitem=&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching

I wish I could find a chart somewhere in the literature showing rpms vs. road speed through each of the gears. Here's my contribution to the RM wish foundation RPM vs speedo speed(KM) on Gen II 4WD, Gen I 4WD, Gen II FWD, Gen I FWD, all in 5th gear: 2000- 53, 58, 59, 64, 3000- 80, 87, 88, 95, 4000- 107, 116, 117, 127, 5000- 133, 145, 147, 159, 6000- 160, 174, 176, 191, Or if you prefer, reaching 6200RPM in a Gen I FWD will put you on par with the world record @ 123mph. stacks Good info., thanks stacks...so when I'm cruising along on backroads the engine is at 3000 rpms...I rarely get her up to 120 kph. Now buddy, tell me what the rpm reading is at each of the points of the upshift light...that would really be interesting to know...you think Fuji Inds. would publish that in the owner's manual.

I could have sworn that I read somewhere in my Fuji shop manual that those shift points (when the light comes on) are able to be manipulated. I just can't quite remember off the top of my head, maybe one of the handful of black knobs that twist in the bay.

This is pretty cool.. I'm not sure what the justy gear ratios are but to anyone that does, this gives you a graph that you can use to compare ratios. www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/

Got my tach, hardest part is going to be figuring out the least embarrassing place to mount it. I am thinking to attach it to the cluster hood on the left, near the vent there. The cluster hood (plastic cover over the gauges) came off easily enough, just got to put it back on, mark a spot and make my holes.
Before I do any cutting though, I want to make sure this thing works. Can anyone tell me which of the two wires going into the coil are the negative side? There are only two so I can suss it I am sure, but if anyone knows it would save some time. Anyway, gonna get it to read and then work on mounting it.

I know the last post on this was a little while ago. I did splice into the yellow and blue wire and it seems to be working just fine. i am currently using a sun techometer that has settings for 4,6, and 8. I do not know what model it is as I just found it laying around at work. The 4 setting has been the most accurate that i can tell, but that has just been "by the seat of my pants" I do not really know of any other way to figure out as my funds are limited as of now. Any suggestions?
