Hi,
I haven't found a source for new pistons yet except through Subaru.
All I've found there is stock bore. What I want is the largest piston available for the 1.2.
.030 or .045 oversize pistons. Who has them in stock?

You could try dustys justys but expect to pay one pretty penny for them

I got Safety brand pistons through my machine shop. They were .020 over, and there were a couple more larger sizes. They were ~$70 if I recall. Just about any automotive machine shop should be able to order those in for you. My shop gets parts two times a week, so it's usually pretty quick.

Hi,
I'll take a look at raceeng.com, thanks. Yea, Dusty could supply.
I'm looking for off the shelf. It's cheaper. New Genuine Subaru are still available, less than $50.00 ea. I'm not so sure about oversizes tho.
I'm looking and collecting parts. It will be awhile before I buy the pistons tho. Factory overbore can be .039 and if I need to bore one of mine, something like that is what I'd want to do.
Hey, let me know if you run across something.

I'm not 100% so if someone else remembers this please back me up, but I recall someone mentioning you can only bore .020 over. Thought someone's machinist said the cylinders were too close together to go any bigger than that.

Hi,
I got that .039, max overbore directly from the FSM. That would be about 1mm. I haven't had the head off one yet to actually look it over and measure.
I've only found rings so far in standard, .025 and .050 mm over. So about .010 and .020 thousands over.
So I don't know for sure at this point. It may be a case of using what's available and not having much choice.

It would make sense that it'd be part availability... Good point.

It should only take 2-3 days to get them through a machine shop And you are correct that the max. over bore is 1mm.

Thanks ferox. I looked them up, looks like they go with Hastings rings. The Genuine Subaru ring set is like $180.00, if I've got that straight. Doug

The shop charged me $130 for pistons and rings. I am not sure if I got that $70 figure from a conversation I had with them or if I just made it up, but $130 for three pistons with ring sets seems like a decent price to me.

I'm running some Safety .020" overbore pisons in my Justy for 2 years now. They seem to be great. came with Hastings rings. around $100 for the set of pistons and rings together. The place I got them from went out of buisness cause of some tax fraud. bummer, they could get me almost anything.

if you go to ITM website and get the # to call them they can give you a dealer near you in my case i was pricing parts before i dis. eng but after doing so i just needed honed. but they put me in contact with a machine shop in NEW JERSY that had oversised pistons for $28.00 each he could also get other parts i would recomend a gasket kit from ebay from westendengparts for $98.00 if you are intrested i can give you more specific info on my rebuild and more on the gasket kit hope this helps

Hey,
I'm downloweding this ITM catalog right now. I'm hoping they have at least .030 over pistons. I know they have the rings from ebay. I haven't measured the cylinder bore yet and it looked good with no ridge at the top. I has to have some taper tho I would think but...I looked at it quick and I'm also thinking Subaru used some good stuff in it. Mabie higher nickel or something?
I removed the pistons, cleaned and checked the 1st and 2nd ring to ring land clearance.
Compression ring has .004 +. Factory spec is .0014 to 0030. This is the most important ring and I won't accept anything more then .002.
Scraper has just shy of .002 Factory spec is .0010 to .0026.
So, new pistons and rings. If I'm boring it may as well go large.

Oh, a couple other things. I have new B/A plug wires too.
What I'm wondering is, if I try a new std. compression ring and it brings the top ring to land clearance .002, I might re-use these pistons.
I have none to try.

Hey,
Bought new FUJI exhaust valves today. BTW, this motor goes in front of an ECVT.
I emailed these guys:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220508636490&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I haven't heard from them. I would be preferrable to get new pistons, rings, pins, and circlips from the same MFG.
We'll see.

The one connecting rod I've cleaned so far...I discovered that the piston pin rides in the rod without any kind of bushing. I'm used to seeing them with the EA series. Copper/brass type. It feels pretty tight tho.

I sent Dusty an email about the 8.5 to 1 forged pistons he puts in his engines. Custom pistons are out of the question for this motor. Forged would be a big plus, if I can get them. Turbo, blower, nitrous, bring it on, huh?

I recieved an email from westendengine and he said the ITM rings are in stock. He called ITM and should have a response Monday on the pistons.
I'm actually looking for the largest piston I can get my hands on:) Safety pistons, I haven't done the research there that I need to.
If Subaru says max 1mm overbore, then they may have produced 1 mm over pistons too.
Any one have a favorite, willing, Genuine Subaru parts person that could look it up?
