First off, thank you Stacks for your very detailed and well put together posts. Also, your custom crank work looks grand! I must admit that I am still unsure about how exactly this happens. I've changed out numerous alternators and never had a problem. With the force that I would assume is needed to tear the crank shaft end appart, I would expect the belt to slip while the crank continues to turn the pully wheel without any slippage at the key or anything breaking, no? Perhaps I just dont get it; can you put it in "lame man's" terms? What is stopping the pully and keyway from moving while the crank is still turning and snapping the key off the shaft? The green arrows, right? Thanks and keep up the great work! -Danimal

OK, I'm confused mostly by my disbelief that this is a common problem. The problem is caused by over tightening the bolt to the point that the alternator changes shape? And the belt is tight enough to damage the crank shaft end? Does it get worse while you drive it? Maybe this will never happen, but I'd like to understand what the cause is before it does! Looks awful. Thanks, -Danimal

Thanks, Stacks! then rolled on a big pile of coffee within 15 minutes of purchase! Any help with this issue, I'm sure, would be most helpful to everyone! Please be more forthcoming. How did it happen and how can we all avoid it? ;D I regret sounding conclusive and rather hold it as a theory that: 1-alt bolt slide can seize, 2-alt bolt can warp alt if slide is seized, 3-alt can partially or fully lockup if alt case halves are warped, 4-alt pivot bolt can shear if alt locks up, 5-torque on crank pulley can increase if alt locks up, 6-crank keyway/bolt can fail if crank pulley torque demand becomes too great. Interesting theories. Thanks for the concise list of possibilities(none of which I have yet experienced). I installed a new timing belt 2.5k miles ago and everything with my alternator and belt still looks great, I'm very happy to say! If ever I have a problem, I know where to send the damaged crank! ;D And speaking of location... BTW Danimal, I'm assuming a Dr. Seuss fan that paints union jacks on valve covers must be from UK, Where is you?? I'm not in the U.K. any longer, I ben an American, like you. I found some nice pictures for you though, with which I wont take up any more space here!: subarujusty.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=memberjustys&action=display&thread=2639Oh, green arrows, got it! Some colors pop out at me while others are more elusive, damn colorblindness. Sticking with blue now then? ;D -Danimal

I see it as a progression of problems rather than a set of independent theories Welcome to the New World, I can't decide wether Tewesbury or Central Virginia is prettier? I've had plenty of alternators stop working but never one seize up. Thank you for helping me see that clearly! Tewkesbury is prettier than any town or city I've seen in the New World. Virginia has more unspoilt beauty, but what they have spoilt, they've REALLY spoilt. Nothing here seems to have had the time or care to settle into the landscape they way European buildings and gardens do/have. Maybe it's just that nothing is built out of local materials... -Danimal

Give it back or I'll begin charging interest. ;D ;D I'm glad that we share a similar interest(that's two interests if you haven't paid me back yet ) in landscape architecture. Just don't get me started about traffic design, something that should certainly go hand in hand with your career. -- How's the crank coming, Stacks? -Danimal

Landscaping? Landscaping! Yes! This is what has been keeping me less active on these boards than usual. I am amidst a big project to rid my life of grass. Redone/doing my front yard in Irish Moss and in Autumn will begin my backyard in Corsican Mint.

Like Rehab, but for your yard!? Yeah, kind of. Just like my enlightenment on how driving older cars is greener, I have come to the conclusion that grass on the mass scale that we U.S. citizens use it, is environmentally irresponsible. Now back to crankshafts.
